depression

Life insurance companies typically view depression as a condition that needs intercession or the patient becomes overwhelmed by negative feelings. Of particular interest is whether the person has been admitted to a hospital due to being overwhelmed, whether their were thoughts or acts of self harm including suicide. Whether their ability to lead a full and productive life has been impaired.

In these types of situations, underwriters will postpone issuing a policy until the person has achieved some control over what they are experiencing. Also consistent care and followup is desireable. Don't make the mistake of assuming that an underwritere wants to see someone off their medication, quite the opposite. Pharmacology has come a long way and underwriters give substantial weight to how well your doctor feels your situation has progressed.

Anxiety

Now anxiety is something that has come along here recently and has allowed some underwriters to separate out the largest group of people who don't represent any significant mortality issues from those with substantial risk. These people are the average people who on occasion might find themselves overwhelmed by temporary problems. The death of a loved one, financial stress, even people in rehab from broken bones.

These are people who are not under mental duress, but can benefit from a prescription to help offset the feeling of "just not feeling right." This has become a more common problem as our society grows faster and more demanding and our time for relaxation and rejuvenation diminishes. Recognizing and treating this has become so common that many insurance companies only check that it is under control and then dismiss it as a mortality risk
