Captive versus independent agents
In the insurance world there are two types of agents, captive and independent.
A captive agent refers to the fact that the agent works for an insurance company and has signed an exclusivity agreement to only show you their products. Typically they represent several lines of insurance such as life, health, auto etc. They will typically focus their presentation on the convenience of purchasing all your coverage from one agent. They work with fewer clients but are looking to walk away with several policies at once.
Independent agents are also referred to as brokers. By law they represent you and have several companies they represent. Therefore they usually only handle a few lines of insurance, but have a tremendous strength as they can offer virtually any option to you in that segment of insurance.
Here is one of the most major differences that some people don't realize. If you ever have to go to court to fight an insurance provider, the captive agent sits with the insurance provider and assists them in fighting your claim. Independent agents sit with you and fight for you.
